How to calculate an hourly estimate

Start with the quoted hourly rate multiplied by the estimated billable hours, then add any separately quoted travel, materials or other charges. Check whether a minimum charge applies and whether the estimated hours include the travel component. Avoid counting a charge twice.

Illustrative arithmetic only—not a TBC rate or a Canberra market average. At an assumed $180 per hour, four billable hours total $720. If the quote separately specifies a $90 travel charge, the total is $810 before any other agreed charges. One further billable hour would take that example to $990.

An estimate based on hours can change if the work takes longer. Ask what preparation could reduce loading time and whether a fixed-scope quotation is available for the move you need.

One-bedroom units and larger Canberra homes

These examples are inventory prompts, not assumed volumes or price brackets. A lightly furnished larger home can have less to transport than a smaller property with extensive storage.

Canberra apartment and townhouse access

If you are moving from an apartment in Braddon, Kingston or another centre, check the building’s loading and lift arrangements. For a townhouse or house in Belconnen, Gungahlin, Tuggeranong or elsewhere, describe stair flights, driveway access and the carrying distance. The individual property matters; these are not standard suburb-based fees.

Give the actual destination address, including whether it is in the ACT or a nearby New South Wales locality. A nearby border crossing and a long interstate route should not be budgeted as though they involve the same distance or schedule.

What changes an interstate price from Canberra?

The furniture volume, route, loading requirements and delivery arrangements all affect a long-distance quote. If a rate per cubic metre is quoted, check how volume is assessed, whether there is a minimum charge and what labour is included. Multiplying a guessed volume by a generic rate can leave out important costs.

Shared-load backloading may suit a smaller inventory or flexible dates. It does not automatically exclude packing, and a dedicated truck does not automatically include it. Compare the actual service scope and written schedule rather than relying on the service label.

Identify extra charges before booking

Timing: confirm any charge attached to your requested day or delivery appointment.
Access: disclose stairs, long carries and parking restrictions before quoting.
Preparation: clarify packing materials, dismantling and reassembly.
Changes: ask how additional items, waiting time or delayed access are handled.
Final total: confirm applicable taxes and whether quoted charges are included or additional.

Allow for storage between properties

If you must leave one property before the next is ready, budget for the complete storage arrangement: collection, receiving or handling fees, the storage period and final delivery. Ask about minimum terms, access to the goods and charges if the dates change.
